My Latest Query Letter

After several different versions (see prior posts) this is my latest query letter. This time, instead of describing the plot I refer to plot points within character descriptions. A word or two of the letter seems to change everyday, but nothing major. I'm currently sending this query to literary agents seeking representation. Wish me luck!

Dear [AGENT],

In my 50,000-word middle grade novel, FLYWINGS, a girl discovers that her dress-up wings really can fly, a secret that she keeps until she saves a boy’s life. The heartwarming yet action-packed tale is set in New England and told by the heroin.

Stacey's voice sets the tone as lively personalities shape her world. She befriends a boy who hunts birds with a slingshot, and hides out under his neighbor’s porch. Her teacher is allergic to cellphones and infested with lice. She meets a retired botanist who conceals an enormous garden full of powerful mutant plants in his attic. Her mom is breathlessly pregnant and her dad can’t stop napping. She fights a fearless bully who steals her wings, and attacks a powerful magician with his fists.

And Stacey flies! She parts clouds with her fingers like bubbles in a bath. She catches a parakeet in her bare hands, spies on squirrels, and inhales jet exhaust. She crash-lands onto her swingset despite several test runs on her bed. She carries a baby over a lake in a blizzard to the ER. She hogties an infamous burglar with Christmas lights and mistakenly exploits a magician’s only weakness.

All the while, Stacey worries because her parents still don’t know that she’s the “Angel” flying over Arlington. Stacey wants to tell them but she knows how much they worry. They would take the wings away, and she’s having way too much fun.

In FLYWINGS, Stacey’s actions captivate an entire town. Hopefully she’s caught your attention too. My completed manuscript awaits your request. Thanks!

Best,

Ryan P. Standley
