FLYWINGS Plot Synopsis:

Narrator, STACEY KRELL, an elementary school student, has just moved to Arlington, Mass. Her dad, TIM KRELL, a nightshift shipping clerk, brings home a lost parcel that contains a pair of dress-up wings. As Tim naps, Stacey discovers that the wings really fly! She sneaks outside and soon perfects her flying skills.

Her classmate and neighbor, WALLY OSWALD sees Stacey fly and vows to keep her secret. He invites Stacey up to his attic, where his grandfather OZZIE OSWALD, a retired botany genius, secretly grows extraordinary mutant plants.

Next, Stacey saves GREG BOWDOIN, the school bully, from drowning in an icy lake. National news media and a private investigator, ELIAS FURLONG, come to town to investigate. The press dubs the mysterious flier the Arlington Angel.

Since people watch the sky all day, Stacey sneaks out for a midnight flight and sees a burglar walk through walls! Not only is it a magician, it’s Furlong, and the wings are his. He attacks Stacey but she escapes.

Then Stacey’s brother EMMETT KRELL is born. During a blizzard, Emmett has a medical emergency. Stacey reveals her powers to Tim so they can fly to the hospital. After Emmett recovers, Stacey confesses everything about magic.

Tim and Stacey decide to give the wings back to Furlong. At his house, Furlong does magic tricks, including his Midas gold ring and a family tree potion. Furlong secretly discovers that Tim has magic ancestors, and therefore magic blood, which he needs to refill his immortality necklace.

Furlong invites Tim back the next day and ties him up. Stacey and Wally watch the conflict from outside, and rush to Ozzie for help. Stacey and Wally soon return, armed with powerful mutant plants. A battle ensues and Tim is safe, but Stacey ends up flying off with Furlong clinging to her ankles.

When Furlong loses his grip and falls into a lake, Stacey reaches to save him. She misses his collar and breaks his immortality necklace. Furlong instantly turns 600-years-old, sinks deep into the water, and doesn’t come up for air.

With all the commotion from the battle, a crowd forms and police confront Stacey. Relieved that magic is over, she surrenders the wings to authorities.

Then on her last day of school, an extremely old Furlong appears and attacks Stacey, looking for his necklace. Greg pounces and nearly beats Furlong to death.

With Furlong’s final words, he explains that his magic must live on for the safety of the planet. He abruptly dies and magically transforms into a sunflower. His magic gold ring turns into wood. Tim stows the flower under Emmett’s stroller, and the Krells visit the Oswald attic. Ozzie plants a sunflower seed in mutant soil, while Emmett teethes on a rattle, unknowingly dusted with pollen. Instantly Furlong’s ring goes from wood back to gold and everyone credits Ozzie’s sprouting plant. Later, Stacey and Tim use the Midas ring to create valuable treasures.

In conclusion, CIA scientists arrive with the wings and ask Stacey to fly for them. They can’t make sense of the magic, or even get the wings to fly without her. And soon after, Stacey witnesses Emmett magically acquire a cookie. Emmett has Furlong’s powers! He may know all the secrets to magic that Stacey can’t wait to hear. But the baby can’t talk just yet.
