Latest Plot Synopsis

Done with draft number six or seven. When will it end? When it's published.
This is not an efficient process. I'm at 28000 words now, down from 60000.

DIZZY, PLOT SYNOPSIS By Ryan P. Standley

DIZZY (28500-words) begins a week after Halloween, just outside of Boston. EMILY KRELL receives black costume wings from her dad, TIM KRELL, who found them in the lost package pile during his FedEx nightshift. While Tim naps, Emily discovers the wings are magic, secretly practices, and soon soars across the sky with ease.

Emily’s neighbor and new friend, WALLY PETERSON, sees her fly. Trading secrets, he invites her to his attic, where his grandfather PETE PETERSON, a retired botany genius, secretly grows extraordinary, rare and mutant plants.

Next, Emily saves GREG BOWDOIN, the school bully, from drowning in an icy pond. Footage of the rescue goes viral, the mystery flyer becomes headline news, and FURLONG ENDICOTT, the powerful magician who lost the wings, investigates.

Then, Emily’s brother COLLIN KRELL is born. During a blizzard, Collin has a medical emergency, their car gets stuck in a snowdrift, and Emily reveals her powers so they can fly to the hospital. At the end of their journey, the wings are badly broken.

Nonetheless, Tim puts the broken wings in a FedEx box and leaves them on the rightful owner’s doorstep. But once Tim picks up Emily at school, their car is magically summoned back to Furlong’s house. Furlong shows off a series of magic tricks, including a family tree spell that reveals Tim’s lineage. Tim is invited to return the next day and learn more magic. And Emily gets to keep the wings, since they’re broken and the only antidote is an extinct plant.

An extinct plant that still exists in Pete’s attic. Wally and Emily magically mend the wings and fly to Furlong’s to eavesdrop on Tim’s magic lesson, which is actually a kidnapping. In the family tree spell, Furlong discovered that Tim has magic blood, which he desperately needs to refill his immortality necklace.

Emily and Wally quickly fly back to Pete’s attic, and shortly return to Furlong’s armed with mutant plants. A battle ensues, Tim is rescued, and Emily flies away with Furlong clinging to her ankles. When the magician loses his grip and falls into a lake, Emily reaches to save him, but misses his collar and snaps off his immortality necklace. Furlong instantly turns 500-years-old and sinks out of sight. The battle attracts several onlookers as well as police. Emily surrenders and the wings are taken away.

Weeks later, Emily races Greg across the schoolyard. A super-old Furlong appears and attacks Emily, looking for his necklace. Then Greg pummels Furlong. With the magician’s final words, he explains that when he dies, everything his magic touched will reverse, including the lives Emily saved with her wings. Furlong’s body magically goes up in flames, and transforms into a sunflower. Immediately, Collin goes into a coughing fit. They rush to Pete’s, so he can plant the sunflower seeds. [end]
