Latest Query Letter

Dear [Awesome Agent],

A girl playing with dress-up wings exploits the powers of a real magician in THE DIZZY SPELL, my 30,000-word Middle Grade novel.

In a Boston suburb, a week after Halloween, Rowena Krell receives lost costume wings from her dad, a disgruntled FedEx nightshift clerk. While Dad naps, Ro discovers that the wings are alive, and can truly fly. She sneaks outside, shoots through the air, and saves a boy from drowning. Footage of the rescue goes viral, the mysterious flyer becomes headline news, and the magician who lost his wings emerges. Then Rowena must reveal her secret to protect her family, and battle powerful magic that she may never escape.

THE DIZZY SPELL soars with action, science-meets-magic realism, and sharp characters that keep pages turning. There’s a budding romance with a window-breaking varmint hunter, an amazing mutant garden grown by a reclusive botanist, and a conniving old magician masquerading as a ghost.

My published works include a weekly parenting column, travel reviews, flash-fiction, and such. Worked a bit at FedEx too, unfortunately.

Below is the first chapter of THE DIZZY SPELL. My completed manuscript awaits your request. Thank you!

Best,

Ryan P. Standley
